How to Source Brazilian Conilon (Robusta) Coffee in 2026: Buyer's Guide

Brazil is the world's largest coffee producer and one of the two largest robusta origins. In Brazil, robusta is called conilon (Coffea canephora), and in 2026 it is moving abroad faster than ever: exports of canephora coffee rose 73.5% in the first seven months of the year (Datamar News, Aug 2026).

This guide explains where Brazilian conilon comes from, what to fix in the contract and how to check the exporter before you commit.

How much conilon Brazil produces in 2026

Conab, Brazil's national supply agency, estimates the 2026 crop at 19.4 million bags of conilon, 6.6% less than in 2025, within a record total of 67.6 million bags (Conab, Sept 2026).

State Conilon 2026 (million 60-kg bags) Change vs 2025
Espírito Santo 12.1 −14.3%
Bahia 3.3 —
Rondônia 2.88 +24%

Smaller crop, stronger exports: availability for new buyers is tighter than the headline numbers suggest. Good exporters plan their shipments months ahead.

The three conilon origins, and what each is good for

Espírito Santo — volume and consistency

The largest conilon region in the world outside Vietnam. Mostly natural (dry-processed) coffee, shipped through the port of Vitória. The reference for soluble coffee makers and roasters who need a reliable robusta base for blends.

Rondônia — the rising quality origin

In the Amazon region, with fast-growing yields and a strong move to quality. Its "Robustas Amazônicos" have a geographical indication (Matas de Rondônia) and are winning places in specialty and premium espresso blends.

Bahia — the alternative

Southern Bahia adds volume close to the coast, useful as a second origin when Espírito Santo is short.

What to fix in a conilon contract

A clear specification protects you more than a low price. Fix at least:

Type and screen size (for example, type 7/8, screen 13 and above), with the maximum number of defects.

Moisture (typically up to 12.5%) and the method of measurement.

Processing: natural, washed or semi-washed.

Crop year and origin state — Espírito Santo, Rondônia or Bahia.

Price basis: fixed price or a differential to ICE Robusta (London), and who fixes it, when.

Pre-shipment sample approval and an independent inspection at loading.

Traceability documents if you sell into the EU (EUDR): farm geolocation and a due-diligence statement. Check the current EUDR application date for your company size.

Payment: a documentary letter of credit from a first-tier bank, paid against shipping documents.

How to check a Brazilian coffee exporter

  1. 1
Ask for the CNPJ (Brazil's company registry number) and check that it matches the contract, the bank account and the export documents.
  2. 2
Check the export history. A real exporter has shipped before: ask for references and look for its name in shipping records.
  3. 3
Meet the team on video, from a company address.
  4. 4
Ask who the producers are: own farms, a cooperative, or purchases from local warehouses.
  5. 5
Never pay upfront fees to "secure an allocation".
